Mastering Boat Handling: Elevate Your Sailing Skills with Sailing Logic

Boat Handling

Confident boat handling is the mark of a skilled skipper, ensuring smooth, stress-free manoeuvres in marinas and tight spaces.

Whether you’re looking to learn to sail or refining your technique, mastering these essential skills will enhance both your safety and enjoyment on the water.

At Sailing Logic, we offer an intensive Boat Handling Course from our base in Port Hamble Marina. Designed for sailors of all experience levels, this hands-on course will equip you with the knowledge and confidence to manoeuvre a yacht with precision—whether departing a busy dock or securing a berth in challenging conditions.

Why Take a Boat Handling Course?

Many sailors, even those with experience, feel a degree of apprehension when it comes to close-quarter manoeuvring. Our course helps eliminate uncertainty by providing practical experience in real-world conditions.

Port Hamble Marina is an ideal training ground—if you can dock confidently here, you can dock anywhere! The skills you develop will prove invaluable whether you’re chartering a yacht, working towards formal sailing qualifications, or simply looking to sharpen your abilities.

What You’ll Learn

This full-day course (08:30 – 16:30) covers essential boat handling techniques, with a strong focus on hands-on practice. Under the expert guidance of a commercially endorsed instructor, you will refine your skills in:

  • Understanding Tide & Wind Effects – Learn how natural forces influence your yacht’s movement and how to use them to your advantage.

  • Berthing Techniques:

    • Approaching a dock bow first or stern first with confidence.

    • Alongside berthing techniques to secure your boat efficiently.

    • Using spring lines to control your departure from a berth.

  • Prop Walk & Prop Wash – Master how propeller forces impact movement, helping you make controlled turns and adjustments in tight spaces.

  • Close Quarters Manoeuvring – Develop precision handling in confined areas, ensuring smooth operation in marinas and busy harbours.

  • Shorthanded Docking – Gain techniques to berth safely even with a minimal crew.

You’ll spend the day practising alongside, using a Beneteau Oceanis 37—an ideal training yacht that provides a realistic experience in a controlled learning environment.

Who Should Join?

Our Boat Handling Course is designed for sailors at all levels. Whether you’re taking your first sailing courses or advancing your skills towards a professional qualification, the structured yet practical approach ensures rapid improvement.

With expert tuition, real-time feedback, and ample practice, you’ll leave with newfound confidence and the ability to handle your yacht with ease.
